Ideas for sorting, storing, and using scraps + Chain PiecingHappy Weekend, everyone! I hope this week's edition finds you as well as possible. New on the Blog - A Jaunt to London + William Morris InspirationA few weeks ago I mentioned being on a special trip with my daughters. I've finally had time to sort through all of the photos and organize my thoughts enough to share about a visit to my favorite place with my favorite girls. We went to London! And it was so fun to see it all through their eyes now that they are adults. During this visit I was on a hunt for William Morris, a 19th Century British artist and probably the first iconic surface designer in the world. His style and influence are alive today and, in fact, his prints are still used today throughout the quilting world. I had a special reason for connecting with William Morris's work on this trip. Click below to read more about London + this fascinating artist (and his daughter, May) and their influence on the sewing world today. If you love textile history, you'll love reading about William and May Morris! Also, in honor of this trip, my Union Jack Quilt patterns are 20% off this week!
More Spring Cleaning: Ideas for Sorting, Storing and USING your scraps! This past week I tackled my sewing room with a vengeance, cleaning up past projects, putting fabric back where it goes and sorting fabric scraps. One thing I've become really purposeful about in the past few years is sorting, storing, using and purging my scraps. Click the button below for a simple break down of how I sort and store my scraps + some quilt projects for using them up!
Sentimental Spring Log Cabin QuiltSpeaking of Scraps, one of my favorite ever spring time quilts is this vintage-inspired log cabin quilt. It was such a perfect scrap/stash buster and totally therapeutic to piece. I was making this quilt in the spring a few years ago at the same time that my Grandmother passed away. Seeing it reminds me of her too. Have you ever made a log cabin quilt? If pushed to choose a favorite, I would probably log cabin blocks are my favorite blocks to piece. If you're looking for some spring sewing inspiration, click below for details and more close-up looks at the blocks and fabric. The post also includes links to how-to make a log-cabin quilt blocks + the cutting sizes for the pieces that I used.
Fun Finds on the Web: Last Minute Easter IdeasLauren at Molly and Mama has a free pattern and tutorial for darling felt rabbits - these stitch up fast and would look so festive in an Easter Basket. I love these decorating ideas for a Spring Tablescape from Craftberry Bush. I don't know that I'll implement any of them by today, but they're so pretty to look at and think about. From food ideas (If you need a break from eggs): How cute are these Carrot-shaped stuffed crescent rolls? If you're short on time to sew, Fox + Hazel has a round up of 25 free Easter Printables here. Pretty much the only sewing I got done this week was choosing (which can be a time consuming part of the process, right?) and sewing the borders on the Easter quilt I shared last week. I picked this Liberty Floral that I love. Now I just need to get the back pieced and finally off to the quilter. Want to hear something funny/fun? As I was piecing this quilt I realized this was probably the most purple I've used in a quilt since the purple patchwork quilt I made for my purple-loving-daughter 13 years ago. I'm don't use much purple in my quilts (don't know why - I don't have anything against purple), so I started wondering why purple felt so perfect in my Easter quilt. And then I figured it out. When I was 8 years old my mom made me a lavender, hand-smocked Easter dress to match my little sisters who were in pink and yellow. These were the best pictures I could find on short notice, but you get the idea. (And if I ever needed proof of my age, this early 80's profile shot at JC Penny's is it. ๐) Happy Passover and Happy Easter weekend for anyone who is celebrating. We'll be getting together with family on Sunday after Easter Sunday church services. I love celebrating Easter. This is my all time favorite video of what Easter means to me. Have a great week!
