12 Beginning ✂️ Sewing Projects + A Fresh Take on Jelly Rolls

Simple Projects for Teaching Anyone How to Sew + Sewing-themed Project Ideas

Happy Weekend Everyone!

First of all, thank you SO much for the love for my new fabric collection, Mary Catherine in last week's newsletter (click here if you missed it). I'm so excited to share more patterns and projects made with this collection through the summer before it releases in September.

I can't believe it's nearly June. It's officially summer vacation here. Summer is a great time for trying new things and learning new skills - such as teaching kids, grandkids, or a friend how to sew!

I put together a simple list (not too overwhelming) of 12 ideas for teaching kids (or grown-ups too!) how to sew.

This includes my favorite tutorial for teaching someone how to make their first quilt using pre-cut 5" charm squares. (So if you don't want to figure that part out, rest easy. I've done the work for you.)

I tried to come up with a wide variety of projects that would both teach a range of different skills, as well as provide an assortment of project ideas to pique anyone’s interest.

Don't need the list this summer, but might need it in the future? Go to the post and pin any of the projects to find them again later.

Guest Post : A Fresh Take on Jelly Roll Quilts

This week guest contributor Michelle Cain introduces her new book, Not-Your-Typical Jelly Roll Quilts. Jelly Rolls are another set of precuts - this time 2 1/2" wide strips x 40". Most Jelly Roll bundles come with 40 strips.

In the book you’ll find 14 projects—from cute wall hangings to big bed quilts— featuring playful blocks like rainbows, cats, and even whales. It’s a great way to bust through your precuts and try fresh, unexpected designs that go way beyond the basics.

Free-printable Patchwork Flag Quilt Pattern

This week I took out my red, white, and blue summer quilts. I have a spot on my stairs landing where I hang this patchwork flag quilt.

This pixelated patchwork flag is a quick make and perfect for using up scraps. You can make an even simpler version without the star block. And there are instructions for both a horizontal or vertical flag (like the one in the picture).

Summer Vacation is officially in full swing, but with no kids living full time at home, this summer feels decidedly different.

Nevertheless, we're already working our way through our Summer bucket list. Last weekend I went to a Heritage Days festival in a little town called Spring City in central Utah. It's always held the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend and I've wanted to go for over 20 years, but with kids at home, there was always something else happening that weekend. So this year my grown-up daughter and I finally made the trip. We loved it!

The festival included restored pioneer-era homes (with many quilts) open for tours, an art show, handmade pottery sale, and good food. I shared a little video of some highlights on Instagram here with more pictures.

Later this summer we're going to the Oregon Coast and I'm SO excited. It's another trip that's been on my bucket list forever. It's a first time for me, so if you have any favorite stops or recommendations between Cannon Beach and Pacific City, I'd love to hear them!

I hope the start of summer is treating you all well.

As always, thanks for stopping by. I'll look forward to sharing more with you next week!

Amy
